Abstract
This article first examines the care of the elderly in a home setting. Seco nd, it discusses the lack of quality of care resulting in abuse, neglect an d abandonment. Existing research on abuse is presented, followed by the stu dy that found the prevalence of abandonment and neglect in 50 elderly slum dwellers. Results indicated physical, economic and emotional neglect. Final ly, the article presents recommendations for future research and training o n the care of the elderly.
