We investigate stimulated Brillouin scattering in six different length
s of dispersion compensating fibers (DCFs) using two laser sources at
1556 nm, one with a very narrow linewidth (similar to 100 kHz) and one
with a large linewidth (similar to 100 MHz). Our results are comparab
le to those of non-dispersion-shifted fibers and agree well with curre
nt theories. These results provide guidelines as to the acceptable pow
er levels which minimize nonlinear effects in DCFs. (C) 1997 Academic
