We present broad band R and narrow band H alpha emission line images of a s
ample of optically selected starburst galaxies from the Markarian lists. Th
e emission line morphology is studied and global properties like luminositi
es, equivalent widths and star formation rates are derived. The radial dist
ribution of Hot flux and the EW are determined using concentric aperture ph
otometry on the emission line and the continuum images. Ha flux is generall
y found to peak in the nuclear region and fall off outwards. The EW is foun
d to peak off-center in most of the cases implying that though the intensit
y of emission is maximum at the nucleus, the star formation activity relati
ve to the underlying continuum often peaks away from the center in Markaria
n starburst galaxies.
