The synthesis and characterization of the complexes [VO(L)(SO)(4)]. 3H
(2)O (1, 2) obtained from the oxovanadium(IV)-directed condensation of
4-methyl-2,6-diformylphenol (1) or 4-methyl-2,6-dibenzoylphenol (2) w
ith diamines [ethylenediamine (a), 1,2-diaminopropane (b), 1,3-diamino
propane (c) and o-phenylenediamine (d)] in EtOH in high yields is repo
rted. Characterization of the compounds was based on elemental analyse
s, conductivity, i.r., electronic and e.p.r. spectra and magnetic susc
eptibility measurements. Available evidence supports a distorted octah
edral environment around vanadium(IV). E.p.r spectra of polycrystallin
e samples are consistent with an axially compressed d(xy)(1) configura
tion.
