Progress of ambipolar mirror trap

Essential experimental results at ambipolar (tandem) mirror traps are brief ly reviewed. Progress on longitudinal plasma confinement by ambipolar barri ers (plugs) and on suppression of transverse anomalous plasma losses in a s olenoid are noted. Experimental exploration of MHD-stabilization of high pr essure plasma (beta similar to 1) by vacuum chamber walls and of ion pumpin g from stationary thermal barriers is emphasized. Geometry of an axisymmetr ic trap, in which self-sustaining D-T reaction is possible, is briefly desc ribed.
