Abstract
The promoter of human monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B genes have been identified. The core promoter region of MAO A is comprised of two 90bp repeats each of which contains two Sp1 elements and lacks a TATA box. The MAO B core promoter region contains two sets of overlapping Sp1 s ites which flank a CACCC element all upstream of a TATA box. The diffe rent organization of the MAO A and B promoters may underlie their diff erent cell and tissue specific expression.
