A one-dimensional mathematical model for boiling heat transfer in a porous
wick with open vapor channels was developed in an attempt to obtain structu
ral optimization of the channels. The effect of the vapor channels on boili
ng heat tranfer was analyzed theoretically. It is shown that the vapor chan
nels in the porous wick can enhance boiling heat transfer and increase the
critical heat flux. It is predicted from this model that the dryout conditi
ons are affected by the channels size and density. An optimum channel densi
ty exists, the value of which depends on the specific properties of the por
ous coating.
