Recently a new class of wavelet-image coding techniques has appeared based
on an embedded technique. We compare the quality of test images reconstruct
ed using the well-known set partitioning technique (SPIHT), trellis coded q
uantization using context-based coding (TCQCB), and classical wavelet metho
d (scalar quantization and entropy coding). The performance of the TCQCB me
thod is better in rate distortion sense than the performance of the SPIHT m
ethod. The reconstructed images obtained with the SPIHT method, however, gi
ve better visual impressions than the reconstructed images obtained using b
oth the trellis context based method and the classical wavelet based method
