Women enrolled in prenatal care at Grady Health System, Atlanta, GA, have r
outinely been offered HIV counseling and voluntary testing since 1987. Cons
istently > 90% have accepted testing. With implementation of US Public Heal
th Service guidelines for perinatal zidovudine prophylaxis in 1994, the mot
her-to-child HIV transmission rate rapidly decreased from 18% to 8% during
the subsequent 2 years.
