Genotypic analysis of herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA extracted from clinica l specimens from a case of fatal disseminated neonatal HSV demonstrated tha t an infant developed an acyclovir-resistant HSV containing a mutation in t he HSV thymidine kinase gene during the first seven days of acyclovir thera py.
