Over the last 20 years, several epidemiological studies from the United Sta
tes, Europe, and the Asian Pacific have shown an increasingly sharper pictu
re of social phobia (SP) in terms of its prevalence, incidence, severity, a
nd correlates. They provide insight into a number of risk factors for onset
of SP and its further course and clinical consequences in the community Su
ch knowledge is an essential addition to studies in clinical settings. This
article reviews the available studies, addressing prevalence and incidence
findings and findings on comorbidity, impairments, and natural course. it
also highlights some community findings on risk factors and implications fo
r etiological research.
