The article looks initially at the policy context for the emergence of the
Farm Business Advice Service (FBAS). The service is then compared to that o
f Cumbria Farm Link, a regional farm business support agency established in
1997. This comparison enables the identification of omissions in the FBAS'
s remit which may, if addressed, enable the service to respond more effecti
vely to the needs of the farming community in the wake of the foot and mout
h disease outbreak.
