The calculated and the experimental data on the structure and the thermodyn
amic properties of water are analyzed in wide ranges of temperature and pre
ssure. The conclusion is that water is a mixture of the low-density amorpho
us (lda) and high-density amorphous (hda) ice clusters near normal conditio
ns with their approximate proportion of 2:3. The conclusion is supported by
the results of D2O quenching under a pressure of P = 1.2 GPa when the quen
ched product was found to be a highly disordered crystalline phase with ice
-XII as a prototype. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
