Antimalarial drug resistance is a major public health challenge and the pri
ncipal reason for the erosion of efficacious treatments. Cost and the limit
ed number of antimalarial drugs in current use impose considerable constrai
nts on malaria control, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The paper describ
es a multilateral, multidisciplinary research project on artemisinin-based
combination therapy, which offers a new and potentially highly effective wa
y to prevent or retard the development of drug resistance.
