This article explores the process of integrating a feminist identity for bo
th experienced and emerging feminists. A qualitative analysis was utilized
to identify themes in two group dialogues. The analysis indicated that the
era in which experienced feminists were initiated into feminism framed this
movement as liberating and empowering, while emerging feminists described
a process of initial resistance when encountering feminism. Emerging femini
sts discussed having to overcome negative media images of feminism before b
ecoming motivated to integrate this identity. Both groups relayed challenge
s in communicating feminist principles and the practices they used to meet
these difficulties. Findings in this article are discussed in relation to t
he need for a sensitive presentation of feminism to young women in classroo
ms or professional settings.
