Surface-alkoxylated silica can be prepared by reacting precipitated silica
with high-boiling and polymeric alcohols. The structure of the products was
investigated through C-13 and Si-29 MAS NMR experiments. The influence of
the alkoxy group structure and density on the hydrolytic stability of the a
lkoxylated silicas was determined through contact with boiling water. Use o
f polymeric or branched alcohols increased the hydrolytic stability of surf
ace-alkoxylated silicas compared to straight-chain alcohols. The rate of su
rface substitution is increased by both acid and base catalysis.
