Preterm premature rupture of the membranes affects 3% to 4.5% of all delive
ries and is associated with increased rates of perinatal morbidity and mort
ality. Multiple predisposing risk factors for preterm premature rupture of
the membranes have been investigated and remain of considerable debate in t
he literature. This article discusses many of these risk factors and the ev
idence that supports them.
