Da. Clauss et al., Hysteresis in a light bulb: connecting electricity and thermodynamics withsimple experiments and simulations, EUR J PHYS, 22(4), 2001, pp. 385-394
A method for integrating energy conversion phenomena, nonlinear circuit beh
aviour and hysteresis into a simple laboratory activity is demonstrated. Cu
rrent-voltage data for a flashlight bulb driven at various frequencies and
amplitudes are measured and simulated. Non-ohmic behaviour and hysteresis a
re observed experimentally and reproduced numerically with a model that inc
ludes the temperature-dependent specific heat capacity and electrical resis
tivity of the filament. The phenomenological model and simple experimental
design could be modified for a variety of audiences.
