It is shown how a conventional digital transmission model with one transmit
ter and one receiver can be generalised to a scenario with many transmitter
s and many receivers. Vector signals are taken instead of scalar ones with
the vector components representing different users and/or subchannels of a
multiuser/multisubchannel transmission system. The core of the description
is a sequence of matrices P(k). k is the discrete-time symbol interval vari
able. The entries in R(k) reflect intersymbol interference as well as inter
user and/or intersubchannel interference. it is demonstrated that vector de
tection - or multiuser detection - of any kind can be taken to cope with th
ose various types of interference, independent of the special linear transm
ission and multiplexing or multiple access method leading to P(k). CDMA, OF
DM and MC-CDMA are taken as examples.
