Sera of 95 patients with SLE were tested for the presence of hepatitis
B surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-hepatitis C antibodies. The result
s show that HBsAg was not detected in the sera of all of the SLE patie
nts. Only one patient was confirmed to have anti-HCV antibodies, sugge
sting that chronic infection with hepatitis B and C is not increased i
n patients with SLE compared with the general population.
