In this paper a newly developed medium-type pulsed fast neutron detector is
proposed. The detector consists of front insulator, n-p converter, absorbe
r, collector and rear insulator. The detection principle is based on the ou
tput signal from both recoil-protons of the n-p converter and secondary ele
ctrons induced by the recoil-protons passing the interface between the abso
rber and the collector. Because of its detection of fast neutrons in the me
dium, unlike many trandifional fast neutron detectors which work in the vacu
um environment, this detector has obvious advantages. It doe, not need vacu
um environment and high voltage power supply. This makes it to be used easi
ly. By choosing teflon as the absorber and by choosing graphite as the char
ge collector, the contribution of the secondary electrons to the output sig
nal can be determined experimentally.
