Metal-containing (1.5 to 11 wt%) nanoparticles embedded in preceramic polym
ers were prepared via thermolysis of metal-containing compounds (MCl4, CP2M
Cl2, MBz(4); M = Ti, Zr) in molten oligosilacarbosilane. The materials were
characterized by small-angle x-ray scattering, XPS, x-ray RED, and EXAFS.
The results show that the nanoparticles (2-20 nm in size) have a complex co
mposition (metallic, chloride, and oxide components) and are linked to the
polymer matrix by M-C and/or M-Si bonds.
