The article reports on the development of a new model for carrying out part
icipatory research and is based on work done at a children's home in South
Africa. The model is a development and synthesis of participatory work and
of the developmental research models and seeks to provide a step-by-step fr
amework in four stages for the implementation of participatory research des
igned to develop effective social services. The model is aimed at the novic
e researcher-practitioner and is intended as a guide for facilitating colla
borative work within social service contexts that meets the aims of generat
ing new knowledge and developing more effective practice.
