We report for the first time experiments showing a magnetic-field-induced e
nhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) on the Si(111)-7 x 7 surface
. An externally applied magnetic field of 10 T increased the SHG intensity
of a selected susceptibility tensor element by approximate to 100% at room
temperature and by approximate to 500% at 120 K. The observed SHG enhanceme
nt is induced by the magnetization of the Si(111)-7 x 7 surface. The electr
on spins on the dangling bonds are suggested to be responsible for the magn
etization.
