In this study, open questions about the temperature disturbances in li
near stability theory are addressed. Temperature effects on flow stabi
lity have been investigated previously either by assuming a time indep
endent shape for the temperature disturbance or by neglecting temperat
ure fluctuations completely. Treating temperature fluctuations as an i
nitial value problem can show the limits in which these assumptions ar
e justified. By means of an asymptotic approach, based on small heat t
ransfer rates, the various effects can be well separated from each oth
