Abstract
Non-destructive testing was performed on 13 concrete and steel bridges , each about 45 years old, in order to estimate their condition. The t est programme prepared by the Railways Authority included measurement of mechanical properties of the steel and the concrete, measurement of the penetration of chlorides and carbonates, estimation of fatigue st ate and integrity of the steel, structure, etc. The results, with a st atistical analysis, allowed the Railways Authority to arrive to a usef ul conclusion regarding the life extension of these bridges.
