A new NMR experiment for correlating diffusion coefficients and chemical sh
ifts is presented. This experiment provides the same information as the con
ventional DOSY experiment, but only requires a single dimension because a n
onuniform magnetic field gradient is used to encode the diffusion informati
on into the lineshapes of the peaks in the chemical shift dimension. By fit
ting the resulting lineshapes, the diffusion coefficient for each peak in t
he spectrum can be extracted. Using this experiment, a qualitative DOSY spe
ctrum can be generated using the results from a single one-dimensional expe
riment. Quantitative results can be determined with the use of reference ex
periments. (C) 2001 Academic Press.
