At reacts with SiC in metal matrix composites, resulting in the deteriorati
on of properties. This communication reports a specific feature in the micr
ostructure of SiC particle reinforced At alloy that is generated by this re
action. Approximately rectangular pits are formed on the SiC particles that
are readily detectable by optical and scanning electron microscopic observ
ations. A possible mechanism for forming the pits is also stated. (C) 2001
