Pd. Cam et al., A new contribution to the epidemiological survey of Cyclospora cayetanensis in Hanoi water supplies (Viet-Nam); a 12-month longitudinal study, MED MAL INF, 31(10), 2001, pp. 597-600
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a protozoan agent responsible for acute diarrhea
l diseases, frequently reported in inter-tropical areas. It affects the loc
al population as well as travelers. A year-long epidemiological survey of p
ublic drinking water supplies was carried out in Hanoi, to determine if thi
s pathogen was found in water, and if seasonal variation was noted. For thi
s purpose, water samples were first examined by common microscope observati
on and then complete identification was confirmed by molecular biology assa
ys based on PCR and sequencing. Cyclospora cayetanensis was found in water
supplies and water taps in Hanoi, suggesting that drinking water is probabl
y an important coccidial source of contamination. (C) 2001 Editions scienti
