Abstract
N-Acyldehydroalanines 3 react with cysteine and penicillamine esters t o give a single diastereomer of the thiazepines 6. By modifying this r eaction, the requirements for steric control were elucidated and a ser ies of penicillin analogs 6 and 12 prepared.
