It was one hundred years ago when Francisco Villaspesa's book 'La copa del
rey de Thule,' was first published. Nowadays his work still shows great int
erest and remarkable appreciation, recognized within the study of Spanish p
oetry, because it can be fully considered as the first set of 'modernista'
poems written in Spain. Before its publication - the preceding titles of ea
rly Spanish books of modernism such as Ninfeas, Almas de violeta by Juan Ra
mon, and the works of significance to symbolism, Alma o Soledades by Machad
o, offers to the claim for the unquestionable role played by Villaspesa wit
h regards to spreading new literary trends at the beginning of the 20th cen
tury, especially in accordance with the assimilation of parnasianism and th
e decadent movement imported from Hispanoamerica. In addition LCRT should b
e considered as a poetic inaugural manifesto of Spanish modernism.
