We report herein the first isolation of a novel structural type sesquiterpe
ne designated as 'litseane' from the twigs and leaves of Litsea verticillat
a Hance (Lauraceae). The isolate (litseaverticillol A, 1) was obtained as a
racemate through bioassay-guided fractionation and found to inhibit the re
plication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type I with an IC50 value o
f 5.0 mug/mL (21.4 muM) and a selectivity index of 2.6. Spectroscopic data
and a potential biosynthetic pathway are given. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science L
