Fifteen Hordeum species and subspecies belonging to groups with different g
enomes were studied using PCR-based markers to establish phylogenetic relat
ionships within the genus. Two hundred and seventeen RAPD and STS markers w
ere used to calculate genetic distances and construct phylogenetic trees. T
he phenetic analysis clearly separated the primary gene pool, represented b
y H. vulgare ssp. vulgare, H. vulgare ssp. vulgare convar. vulgare f. agrio
chriton and H. vulgare ssp. spontaneum, from the secondary gene pool, repre
sented by H. bulbosum and the tertiary gene pool, represented by American w
ild barleys and H. bogdanii. Data obtained from PCO analysis are in complet
e agreement with taxonomic classifications proposed previously, which were
comparisons of numerous morphological, cytological and reproductive charact
ers.
