Dca. Collins et Ra. Kearns, The safe journeys of an enterprising school: negotiating landscapes of opportunity and risk, HEALTH PLAC, 7(4), 2001, pp. 293-306
In this paper, we discuss repent efforts to improve the safety of children
travelling to and from New Zealand's largest primary school. The results of
a travel survey completed by parents and pupils are reported, together wit
h our recommendations for reducing congestion at the school gate and promot
ing healthy alternatives to car travel. Reflecting on this research, we fin
d that market-oriented education reforms have provided schools with strong
incentives Far increasing their roils-a course of action which may endanger
pupils' well-being. At the same time, they have provided some schools with
opportunities for resisting the present urban (dis)order and promoting com
munity health. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
