The authors present a review of 45 proximal carpectomies performed for
various reasons between 1986 and 1995. The pre- and postoperative ass
essment was clinical and radiological, and the intra-operative analysi
s was based on the status of the cartilage of the radiolunate joint, a
nd of the head of the capitate. Postoperative assessment was based on
the biomechanical behaviour of the wrist after surgery. At the final f
ollow-up, the authors noted that pain was improved in 90% and function
al movement was preserved in 70% of patients. There was approximately
20% loss of strength when compared to the opposite hand.
