L. Dacruz et al., OCULAR GENE-THERAPY - THE BASIC SCIENCE AND CURRENT STATE OF RESEARCH, Australian and New Zealand journal of ophthalmology, 25(2), 1997, pp. 97-104
Recent technical advances have led to the demonstration of the molecul
ar basis of many genetic eye diseases. Methods now in use have been ab
le to both suppress and insert genes in vitro and in vivo in ocular ce
lls. The combination of this new knowledge and these techniques offers
the potential for a new therapeutic approach to diseases that current
ly have no treatments. The scientific basis of gene therapy is introdu
ced and then the current state oi research is discussed in relation to
the eye and ocular tissues.
