This study examined research attitudes and behaviors of landscape architect
ure faculty at universities in North America. A questionnaire was mailed to
all assistant professors, associate professors and professors listed as fa
culty in the 1998 Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) dir
ectory. Survey results indicated a clear dichotomy between positive researc
h attitudes and negative research behaviors. This dichotomy was analysed in
light of Fishbein and Ajzen's theory of reasoned action in order to provid
e an explanatory framework. The analysis suggests (1) lack of a positive su
bjective norm and (2) lack of substantive consequences for research behavio
r as primary deterrents to positive research behavior among faculty in land
scape architecture. Recommendations have been provided for increasing the l
evel of research activity in landscape architecture. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scie
