B. Kumar et al., SCEDOSPORIUM PROLIFICANS CORNEOSCLERITIS - A SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME, Australian and New Zealand journal of ophthalmology, 25(2), 1997, pp. 169-171
Background: A case of Scedosporium prolificans corneoscleritis is repo
rted in a patient who had developed scleral necrosis following pterygi
um surgery, with adjunctive beta-irradiation. This fungus has been rep
orted to be the causative organism in only two previous cases of corne
oscleritis. Methods: The patient presented with signs and symptoms typ
ical of corneoscleritis. When the fungus was isolated from a biopsy sp
ecimen, aggressive scleral debridement was carried out and intensive a
ntifungal therapy was instigated. Results: After a prolonged course, t
he eye was rendered sterile. Conclusion: Early conjunctival recession
and aggressive scleral debridement combined with intensive instillatio
n of antifungals are crucial to the successful management of fungal co
rneoscleritis.
