We reported that the irradiation to a novel amphiphilic rhenium (I) complex
resulted to the photoisomerization of ligand 4'-nitrostilbazole that coord
inated to the complex in solution and at air/water interface. pi -a isother
ms and FT-IR spectra demonstrated that the photoisomerization of the comple
x would lead to small change of area per molecule and stacking of molecules
became more orderly than those without photo isomerization. The electronic
spectra proved that the photoisomerization had influence to the metal to l
igand charge transfer (MLCT) transition of the complex, and atomic force mi
croscopy (AFM) measurement showed the aggregate formation on the surface af
ter irradiation to the complex. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights r
