The pathophysiology of the spectrum of conditions that constitute gestation
al trophoblastic disease is discussed in this article. Current modalities a
vailable for the diagnosis of these conditions are reviewed. The staging of
gestational trophoblastic neoplasia is also reviewed with particular empha
sis on prognostic factors that influence treatment decisions. Finally, curr
ent trends in the management of trophoblastic tumors and the overall progno
sis for these patients are addressed in the article.
