Abstract
Distributions of simultaneous fiber failures-bursts-in loaded fiber bundles are studied considering inertia and damping. Resulting burst size distribu tions have universal properties: all approach the power law D-Delta similar to Delta (-2.5) for larger burst sizes Delta. Momentary burst size distrib utions evolve with increasing damage and do not follow power laws but are s till universal. Finally, it is briefly outlined how to use distribution pro gression to assess damage state. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
