Spontaneous polymerization (S-Poly) is a novel process to form protective p
olymer coatings on aluminum and other metals. Here we discuss polymerizatio
n and coating properties when two fluorinated monomers are introduced into
the S-Poly system. The resulting coatings were characterized using attenuat
ed total reflectance fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), differential sc
anning calorimetry (DSC), optical microscope and other measurements. Fluori
nated coatings showed excellent dielectric properties and strong hydrophobi
city. Their dry adhesion strength was a little lower than the coatings in p
revious systems, but changed very little after immersion in hot water for s
everal days. Some of the fluorinated coatings exhibited significantly impro
ved corrosion resistance in most corrosion tests.
