F. Hanut et al., Survey and chronological interpretation of the artifacts of a refuse pit in Novelles (Mons, Hainaut Province), REV NORD, 82(338), 2000, pp. 93-113
The site of Nouvelles was occupied in the Higher-Empire by a large agricult
ural facility: the excavations carried out since 1964 have revealed the var
iety of the archaeological material and the wealth of the ornamental fixtur
es of the various rooms of the main house. In 1972, the research carried ou
t on the extension of a large refuse pit filled during the second half of t
he IInd century. The filling material of this pit delivered a large quantit
y of pottery: A large series of sigilla potteries from the south and the ce
nter of Gaul but, above all, a high number of cooking implements baked in a
reducing atmosphere. The pottery profile of the pit, typically Nervian, is
very representative of the material in use in the pre-Antonian period in t
he Bavay area.
