Whenever referring to Roma, immediately a note is bound to follow - it is a
problem. Most common complaints and concerns are associated with: 1. the d
emographic situation and the reproductive behaviour of Roma in contrast to
the majority population in the Slovak Republic, 2. the increased rate of cr
ime of the Roma population, 3. the difference in the way of life and life s
trategies, 4. the migration of Roma to countries of Western Europe, 5. the
financial costs "invested" to address or regulate the position of Roma in t
he SR and the abuse of the system of social protection, 6. scores of activi
ties and projects evoking doubts in the majority population about the effic
iency and meaningfulness of the efforts taken.
