The unoccupied states of the Mo(112) surface have been studied using invers
e photoemission (IPES). Good agreement between calculated surface bands and
surface-induced features of the spectra has allowed an explanation of the
origin of the spectra based on derived symmetry assignment of the states. I
n particular, different sensitivity of the unoccupied 0.7 and 2.3 eV peaks
(E - E-F) in the IPES spectra to oxygen adsorption can be attributed to dif
ferent symmetry states located on the surface atoms. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scie
