Abstract
We discuss the possibilities of investigating the semiregular and irregular light change found in evolved late type giant stars with photometric and v isually obtained (amateur) data. Period analysis has been done on light cur ve data from both sources for a sample of semiregular variables. The result s are compared to test the ability of visual data to show the frequency con tents present in these variables. We find that both sources of data complet e each other, as fitting the fine structure visible only in the photometric data needs long-term visual monitoring to guarantee the uniqueness of the fit.
