Concentrations of compounds released from hairdressing products such a
s ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, ethanol, propane, butane, volatile organ
ic compounds, and dust particles were measured in hairdressing salons.
When compared with general accepted standards for the work place (thr
eshold limit values, TLVs), the probability to exceed these limits is
small even in ''worst case'' situations. Odour thresholds are exceeded
of compounds such as ethanol and ammonia. The comfort limit of 1200 m
u L/L CO2 is exceeded in the winter season in the investigated natural
ly ventilated salons due to insufficient ventilation, especially on bu
sy days (Fridays and Saturdays). CO2 concentrations of up to 2600 mu L
/L were measured. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
