A director of a January term in Spanish presents the rationale associated w
ith the design of a set of activities that combine cultural understanding a
nd language practice in Spanish courses at three different levels in their
study abroad program. Specific activities that stimulate the use of target
language during a brief study-abroad experience as well as a deeper underst
anding of the host culture are described. The activities include journaling
debriefing and the use of web-delivered writing exercises.
