Abstract
Antonio Vallisnieri (1661-1730) is generally regarded as the first modern I talian geologist. One of his letters of 1710 is published here because it c ontains interesting critical remarks about the contemporary Luigi Fernando Marsigli (1658-1730), the founder of scientific oceanography. It is accompa nied by bio- Graphical notes of both. As an annex we express our appreciation for all support given to the Geolog enarchiv, especially the contributions by many donators.
