This article presents an overview of the epidemiology and control of sexual
ly transmitted infections (STIs) in the Nordic countries. These countries h
ave succeeded in controlling gonorrhoea and syphilis, and the incidence of
HIV infection is low. However, during the last few years the incidence of a
ll STIs has increased, although from very low levels. Genital chlamydial in
fection is still prevalent, and is also increasing. Dermatovenereologists a
re responsible for the specialized care of STIs, but family doctors and gyn
aecologists are responsible for the management of a great portion of STIs.
